Speech and Swallowing Sequelae of Palatal Tissue Necrosis Due to Drug Abuse

One type of drug abuse involves the nasal inhalation of different substances such as cocaine. In some cases, individuals incur tissue damage that may include necrosis of the roof of the mouth. The lack of separation between the oral and nasal cavities produces both speech and swallowing problems, which have not been clearly discussed in the literature. The specific problems are identified and recommendations for management are proposed for professionals working in the area of drug addiction.
