Public TV made accessible at the Valencian Community: Constraints, strategies and proposals for improvement
2021
There is an increasing number of research publications and academic events on
audiovisual accessibility focused on both working and educational spheres. Indeed,
much work still remains to be done in order to guarantee real inclusion for people with
sensory impairments. This paper aims to provide a first-hand professional perspective
on the main constraints found when carrying out audiovisual accessibility practices in
the Valencian Community, and to suggest possible solutions to the problems
encountered in order to guarantee the best possible service. To do so, descriptive and
prescriptive methods will be employed. The data are collected from previous studies
developed in this direction and from first-hand experience in accessibility services at the
Valencian public TV station A Punt Media. This sort of study constitutes a useful tool for
identifying the real challenges found during professional practices and suggesting
proposals for improvement that may contribute to enhancing the quality of accessibility
services. It goes without saying that users’ feedback is fundamental to guarantee the
quality of products and to take a step forward into improving the way accessibility
services are developed. In this sense, the results of this research point out that it is
necessary to ensure good working conditions, providing the required materials and
satisfying professionals’ needs so that they can make the most of their skills and be able
to work in a more efficient way, thus taking a solid step forward towards guaranteeing
the real inclusion of people with sensory impairments.
