Surface modification of magnesium by functional polymer coatings for neural applications

2015
Magnesium ions have been used as a clinical neuroprotectant for many years. With the rising interest in magnesium implants for orthopedic and cardiovascular applications, research and development of solid magnesium implants for neural applications has just begun. Aside from its neuroprotective properties, several other aspects of magnesium, including conductivity and biodegradability, make this material attractive for use in nerve regeneration and other treatments for the nervous system. In this chapter, we will review the different polymeric coatings that can be used to enhance the efficacy of magnesium implants for neural applications. These coatings deliver novel functionality to magnesium implants including tunable degradation, enhanced biocompatibility, and delivery of magnesium ions to function as a bioactive molecule.
