Design, Finite Element Based Validation of a Multi-channel Axial Flux Double Sided Switched Reluctance Motor and Its Fabrication

This paper presents design, simulation and fabrication of a 4 phase, 24 V, 16/12 multi-channel axial flux double sided switched reluctance motor (AFDS-SRM). The machine has been designed by rigorous calculation then the design has been validated and optimised by FEM simulation using a standard, commercially available, FEM software. The machine fabrication has been done locally. Earlier a 24 V, 0.25 hp, 4-Phase 8/6 AFDS-SRM was designed. On comparison of the results obtained by FEM simulation it has been found that the 16/12 multi-channel AFDS-SRM has overcome most of the shortcomings of the previously designed 8/6 AFDS-SRM. The improvement in performance is mainly the result of the multi-channel configuration.
