Melbourne's North: The new knowledge economy

The present paper is a summary of 'Melbourne's North: The New Knowledge Economy', a study commissioned by NORTH Link and the Northern Metropolitan Melbourne Area Consultative Sub- Committee. It was prepared by NIEIR and provides a detailed analysis of the regional economy of Melbourne's North, building on the previous report, 'Growing Melbourne's North: Developing an Integrated Economy'. After acquiring and collating data on the region, NIEIR developed a model using data envelope analysis, to enable regional stakeholders to develop appropriate policies and actions to improve performance in Melbourne's north. The report includes recommendations and benchmarks that will support growth and quality employment outcomes for the region into the future as it undergoes the transition into a knowledge economy. The report concludes that the region can achieve significant economic and social benefits if stakeholders share resources and cooperate across local government boundaries to form a discrete economic zone.
