Preparation of calcium phosphate cement using sintering process and evaluation of mechanical properties

2021
Abstract Calcium phosphate cement is preferred to other conventional materials in the field of biomaterial, dental implants due to their improved properties of compressive strength, wear strength etc. In the present work an attempt is made to synthesize calcium phosphate cement as matrix material and reinforced with two different materials such as copper and steel wires of diameter 1.5mm by using sintering processes. Micro structural characterization is carried out for cement composite prepared. Mechanical properties were determined before and after addition of reinforcement wires to know the improvement in properties of cement composite and it was noted that mechanical properties of the cement composites improved after addition of the reinforcement wires. Mechanical tests were performed for calcium phosphate cement for four different compositions. The compressive stress obtained for cement mixture reinforced with 1.5 mm steel is 5.56 Mpa compared to 1.5 mm copper reinforcement of 3.06 Mpa. The bending stress obtained for cement mixture reinforced with 1.5 mm copper is 5.87 Mpa compared to 1.5 mm steel is 6.12 Mpa. The Microstructural characterization is done for cement composite using scanning electron microscope and XRD analysis is done for specimens.
