Possible effects in solids in ultrastrong magnetic fields

1984
The authors examine some possible phenomena related to the action of magnetic fields of up to 10/sup 7/ G on the condensed state. An external magnetic field in the megagauss range may convert any magnetic material to a ferromagnetic. An examination of the probability of this effect indicates that possible crystals are the orthoferrite RFeO/sub 3/, antiferromagnetics of the type of Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and KMnF/sub 3/, and similar materials. Indications are given of some obvious consequences of ultrastrong magnetic fields acting on solids.
