The invention relates to a method for detecting a reversal of terminals of a positioning element (1), wherein the positioning element (1) has a sensing head motor (3) which is bidirectionally driven via a plurality of ports so that an exchange of at least two of the terminals of the control timer motor ( 3) a reversal of the displacement direction of the positioning element (1) results; with the following steps: - adjusting an actuator (4) of the positioning element (1) to a neutral position (N), from the movement of the actuator (4) is possible in one or two directions; - actuation of the actuating encoder motor (3) according to a diagnosis variable, which is selected such that to expect different amounts of the changes of the setting position of the actuator (4) due to the driving of the diagnosis variable in a non-reversal of the connections and at an interchange of the connections are; - detecting by the actuation of the actuating encoder motor (3) resulting current change in the manipulated position of the actuator (4); - establishing a permutation of at least two of the terminals, when the amount of current change in the manipulated position of the actuator (4) differs from the amount of the expected change in the control position.
