[Endometriosis of the navel: one case study]

2000
Isolated umbilical endometriosis remains a rare and exceptional instance; the case of one observation located at the level of the navel is reported in this article. It is a blackish tumor that bleeds and manifests itself by painful menstruation with hemorrhaging. The evolution of the menstruation serves to orient the diagnosis. The clinical and ultrasound examination showed an angiomatous lesion without any intra-abdominal localization. The biopsy without local anesthesia confirmed the certainty of the diagnosis of a lesion of umbilical cutaneous endometrosis and the assessment of the spread should look for other locations particularly in the abdominal cavity. The treatment of this disorder consists in a conservative medical treatment based on progesterone but the treatment of choice remains surgical excision. The authors indicate that the etiological pathogenesis of this disorder remains a mystery; even though the cutaneous localization on a laparotomy scar the umbilical localization remains incomprehensible. Thus the role of genetic immunological and hormonal factors remains to be determined.
