TRACKING A RAIL YARD REHAB

1997
The Stamford Rail Yard is the largest yard on Metro-North's New Haven Line, which runs between New Haven and New York's Grand Central Station. Located roughly midway between the line's endpoints, it is a crucial link in the commuter rail system, providing overnight storage for half of its trains. In the early 1980s it was determined that a major rehabilitation effort was necessary to run the commuter line more cost-effectively; by 1994 the yard's rehabilitation was underway. The article explains how the rehabilitation work was done successfully with no interruption in service. The improved yard is now in full operation, providing the line with a bigger and better maintenance and storage facility.
