Perspectives from a Neutral State: Dutch Sources on the Question of the Armenian Genocide
2017
The question whether or not the massacres of Armenians in 1915 were a genocide is hotly debated between Armenian and Turkish historians. A great deal of controversy is related to the trustworthiness of Ottoman/Turkish, Armenian and Entente-power sources. This article investigates whether sources from a neutral country in the First World War - the Netherlands - can help to clarify this matter and comes to the conclusion that these sources seem to corroberate the notion of an Armenian genocide, but also that these Dutch sources are not beyond reproach themselves and are too scarce to make such a judgement.
