Harmful algal blooms and their eco-environmental indication

2021
Abstract Harmful algal blooms (HABs) in freshwater lakes and oceans date back to as early as the 19th century, which can cause the death of aquatic and terrestrial organisms. However, it was not until the end of the 20th century that researchers had started to pay attention to the hazards and causes of HABs. In this study, we analyzed 5720 published literatures on HABs studies in the past 30 years. Our review presents the emerging trends in the past 30 years on HABs studies, the environmental and human health risks, prevention and control strategies and future developments. Therefore, this review provides a global perspective of HABs and calls for immediate responses.
