Magnetoresistance and magnetocaloric effect in Er5Si3

2012
The results of electrical resistivity and heat capacity measurements on the intermetallic compound Er5Si3, exhibiting field induced metamagnetic transition, are presented here. The magnetoresistance (MR) and isothermal entropy change (ΔS) are obtained from the in-field resistivity and isothermal magnetization data. Considerable large negative MR and ΔS have been observed over a wide T range peaking on the magnetic transition temperatures. The peak values of MR and ΔS are typically −35% and −15 J/mol K respectively for a magnetic field change of 0-50 kOe.
