Production of β-lactam Antibiotics through Penicillin V Acylase

2013
Semi-synthetic β-lactam antibiotics are the largest group of antibiotics used worldwide. Penicillin V Acylase (Cephalosporin acylase) is a crucial enzyme for the development of new enzymatic pathways leading to the production of semi-synthetic cephalosporins. 7-amino desacetoxy cephalosporanic acid (7-ADCA) is an important intermediate in these pathways. Large quantities of this compound are needed, but the traditional production routes are time-consuming, expensive and/or polluting.Pakistan being an agricultural country has potential resources of biomass for their exploitation in the manufacture of cell biomass, enzymes or microbial metabolites.
