Normative values for thyroid volume for children aged 6～12 years in Jiangsu

Objective To define the upper normal limit of thyroid volume based on age and body surface area(BSA) for children aged 6～12 years in Jiangsu province.Methods Iodine status was assessed based on urinary iodine contents,thyroid volume was measured.Results Thyroid Volume of 2 100 schoolchildren aged 6～12 years in Jiangsu areas where iodine intake is normal,were determined by ultrasonography.It is shown that thyroid volume was related to age and BSA.The normative volume limits based on age were suggested.Normal limits of thyroid volume calculated based on body surfaced area are also reported.Conclusions These normative values are useful for IDD surveillance in Jiangsu province and also referential for revision of Chinese national normative values for schoolchildren.
