Research Progress of Pleiotropic Effects of Statins in Cardiovascular Diseases

2012
Statins have laid the foundation status in the level one and level two prevention of coronary heart disease(CAHD).It is universally recognized as the primary mechanism to get clinical benefit that statins can significantly reduce levels of serum total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. However, with the development of basic research and evidence-based medicine in recent years, more and more evidences suggest that statins have pleiotropic effects independent from cholesterol lowering. The pleiotropic effects of statins have played an important role in preventing and treating atherosclerosis,CAHD,arrhythmia, myocardial hypertrophy, heart failure and other cardiovascular diseases.
