A new device for determining the separability of high-specific gravity minerals

1989
ABSTRACT A precise mineral separation device is described, analogous to a heavy liquid centrifuge but with the effective specific gravity of a fluid created magnetically (with the turn of a knob) so as to reach specific gravity levels as high as 21. Process, procedure and results are presented for example separations of an experimental tin sample and an experimental niobium pre-concentrate at effective specific gravity split points in the range of 3.7 to 6.5. Altogether a versatile and efficient measurement of separability of minerals is demonstrated using this new Magstream TM technology, and potential for substantial upgrade is indicated for both of the materials tested.
