Research and Evaluation on the Machining Properties of Plantation Eucalyptus Veneer LVL

2012
In this paper, the machining properties (including planning, sanding, drilling, shaping, mortising and cross cutting) of LVL, compared with Toona ciliata Roem, were tested. Their properties were conducted according to the criteria ASTM D1666-87 and the test on crosscutting is referred to the method established by New Zealand Forest Research Institute. In the meantime, the individual properties were assigned to the corresponding grades according to criterion. The results show as follow: The planning, sanding, drilling, and crosscutting machining properties of LVL and Toona ciliata Roem show excellent;the drilling properties are both good; but the mortising property of LVL show middle, and Toona ciliata Roem show good. In the machining performance comprehensive evaluation system for full marks 50 points, its comprehensive marks were separately for 46.3 points and 44.4 points;the comprehensive machining properties of two kinds of wood show excellent, and the comprehensive machining properties of LVL were slightly worse than Toona ciliata Roem. So plantation Eucalyptus veneer LVL had great potential to be used in the manufacture of high-grade furniture and high-added value products.
