Cymbopogon flexuosus—an essential oil-bearing aromatic grass for phytoremediation

Abstract Continuous increase in polluted sites over the world has been recognized as a serious concern for ecological, social, and economic sustainability. This chapter explores lemongrass-based phytoremediation strategy for remediation and utilization of polluted sites with multiple benefits. Cymbopogon flexuosus is famous as an essential oil-bearing aromatic grass, and offers bioeconomy in term of essential oil yield. Moreover, lemongrass based cultivation on polluted sites has been suggested as a safe and feasible strategy. In conclusion, lemongrass is a valuable genetic resource for phytoremediation of polluted sites and waste dumpsites with multiple benefits, minimum inputs, and low risk.
