Multitone signals and its applications in measurement

2007
Broadband signal excitation is usually used for frequency response measurements or system and network parameter identification. This paper analyzed the use of multitone signals for that purposes.Multitone signals are easier to control than Chirps as frequency sweepers or white noise signals. The analysis describes multitone signal generation and properties. Two circuit measurement examples are given in the frequency and time domains. With a multitone signal having the proper bandwidth as the exciting source of a linear system, the impulse response can be obtained by calculating the correlation between the exciting source and the system response. This approach does not need deconvolution calculations and can be solved directly in the time domain. For linear systems, the multitone signal is convenient for both frequency response measurements and system parameter identification.
