A New Method for Z-profile Measurements of Paper Additives

A method combining microtome sectioning for sample preparation and analytical pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) for detection is used as a profiling technique for paper additives. Py-GC/MS is very versatile as it can analyze any organic material. Therefore, many different applications for the described technique are conceivable. The potential of the described profiling method is shown on different paper samples such as preimpregnated and coated papers containing additives from different chemical classes such as polyvinylacetate (PVAc), styrene acrylate (SAL), urea formaldehyde (UF), and styrene butadiene (SB).
