Well into the twentieth century, open discussions of sexuality were practically taboo. Opportunities to talk about sexuality with a doctor frequently arose only in connection with diseases that had a shameful character. The reprehensible character of venereal disease was automatically extended to sexuality. Recently, however, in addition to the pathological aspects, the physiological-and erotic-aspects of the skin have been examined and studied (1).
