Fluid-structure interaction of a cylinder with three fins and steady flow

2007
This paper investigates vortex induced vibration and response amplitudes of a cylinder with three disturbing fins exposed to uniform flow at a low Reynolds number by using a finite element numerical model.Dimensionless incompressible Navier-Stokes equations were used to simulate the flow field around cylinder. The vibratory cylinder with or without three disturbing fins in flow field may be approximated as a mass-spring system. The fluid-solid coupling of the finned cylinder with external flow field is numerically simulated by applying iterative computation to the displacements and stresses on the fluid-solid interfaces. The remarkable decrease of response amplitude with the use of equilateral triangular fins is found, comparing with bare cylinder.
