Preliminary characterization of a Rb Pulsed Optically Pumped clock for space applications

2019
We present the implementation and preliminary characterization of a Rb clock physics package developed by Leonardo S. p. A. in cooperation with INRIM. The clock is based on the principle of pulsed optical pumping (POP) and has been optimized in terms of mass and size. The targeted expected frequency stability performances are consistent with state-of the art laser-pumped rubidium clocks, while mechanical and thermal design are going to be compliant with space environment. The industrial implementation of the POP clock would be of great interest in a number of space applications, including Global Navigation Satellite Systems and deep space navigation.
