Discussing a Broad Strategy Against Troubled IS/IT Projects

2019
The scope of the present paper is to discuss the research strategy which could contribute to cancel out the IS/IT project failures. Broad literature brings evidence that most faults derive from the behavior of IS/IT project managers. In addition, researchers show how this situation emerges all over the world since decades. This temporal and geographic extension leads us to ask: What the managers of the five continents have in common? The answer is that working managers have nothing in common except for the theoretical preparation that they learnt when they were young. Hence the scarce professionalism of present-day IS/IT managers can but derive from theoretical computer science (TCS).The second part of the paper verifies this conclusion and we observe how there are several computing theories, but they are somewhat narrow, self-referential and abstract. These theories provide effective aid to specialists but are not so adequate to prepare managers who address broad and multifaced issues. The present study closes with an urgent appeal for a new research strategy that should unify the various aspects of computing and provide the suitable professional preparation to working managers.
