IoT-Based Cyber-Physical Additive Manufacturing Systems: A Secure Communication Architecture, Research Challenges and Directions

The digital system modeling plays an important role to plan, design, cost-effective layouts, and market-driven implementation of the physical devices such as electric vehicles, 3D-home, and aircrafts. Based on the client demands, requirements, and specifications, manufacturing company is sending physical items or layouts or STL files to destinations which can be local and international places. Unfortunately, it is a challenging, expensive, risky, and time consuming task. Interesting, the internet of things (IoT) can play an important role to transfer design layout to the qualified and intended destination for verification and fabrication. Regrettably, attacker can hack, modify, steal, and destroy layout and prototype over networks. Due to industrial revolution, the additive manufacturing industry is the second most vulnerable sector after financial institution where cyber attack can play significant impact. This paper summarises the cyber physical additive manufacturing systems security and privacy issues and provide a secure IoT communication architecture. In order to improve the security and privacy, we proposed an innovative IoT communication network where information is securely transferred to the destination.
