An elevator system, comprising: a first elevator car (22) in a hollow lifting (26); a first counterweight (24) in the hollow lifting (26); a first load bearing member (40) coupling the first elevator car (22) to the first counterweight (24); a second elevator car (32) in the hollow lift (26) below the first elevator car (22); one second counterweight (34) in the hollow lifting (26) above the first counterweight (24); and a second member load bearing (50) coupling the second elevator car (32) to the second counterweight (34), the first elevator car (22) has a part cabin having an outer envelope and defines the space within which passengers are carried, and at least one step (80) on the cab portion through which passes at least a portion of the second load bearing member (50); wherein the at least one passage (80) is within the outer envelope portion cabin, characterized in that the passage accommodating the member load bearing (50) is within a space defined by at least one inner side wall (92) of the lift cage (22) supporting a cab operating panel (90).
