Territory, identity, music and popular rites in the city of Rio de Janeiro

2019
ABSTRACTThe article investigates the musical expressions of jongo and samba as mediators between social groups and their processes of territorialization in the city of Rio de Janeiro. In order to undertake the analysis, the authors present a set of verses and lyrics that structure affective links between the inhabitants of the favelas and hills and their territorializations in the urban fabric. Through analysis of this scope, we identify expressions of resistance, memory preservation, and marking of identity that approximate the two musical genres.
