Phase constitution of the composite manufactured by the interaction of a Si + Al melt with a porous carbon matrix

2004
The phase constitution of the composite manufactured by reacting aluminum-doped silicon melt with a porous carbon matrix was studied. The polyphase constitution of the composite is dictated by the ratio of carbon to the melt that enters the microdomains of the carbon matrix. Crystals of new phases appear concurrently with the recrystallization of the matrix carbon. Normally unstable phases are formed during the cooling of the C-SiC material.
