EMC and railways

2003
With the growing need for electrification and the widespread use of electronics for power conversion, today's railway EMC environment is very different to previous years. Into this hostile environment is added the need for radio communications and telecommunications for signalling, control and safety purposes. As if this were not sufficient the passengers expect to be able to use their mobiles, and the areas surrounding the railways are becoming increasingly filled with radio base stations and other electrical equipment with which the railway needs to co-exist. With electronics being used for control and signalling purposes, the issue of EMC now encompasses this wider dimension of safety. This guide primarily addresses the internal EMC of railways.
