Design and performance of a novel position-sensitive electron spectrometer

1993
A spherical electrostatic spectrometer has been designed, via computer simulation, and constructed to be used in the angular and energy distribution measurements of electrons arising from ion-atom or photon-atom collisions. Several novel features have been incorporated with the design of the spectrometer which enable the simultaneous collection of all angles in a scattered plane (defined as the plane perpendicular to that containing the projectile beam axis and the spectrometer symmetry axis) with an angular resolution of {approx_equal}2.5{degrees} and the collection of {approx_equal}1.5% of the analyzer pass energy with a resolution of {approx_equal}0.5%. A gas get is employed with the source volume being {approx_equal}0.5 mm{sup 3}. Electrons are detected by a position sensitive detector while a time-of-flight detector allows for the charge state determination of the ionized target atom. Further computer simulations and tests of the spectrometer are being performed.
