2012 LAND GRANT AND SEA GRANT NATIONAL WATER CONFERENCE Portland, OR Poster Abstract Spatially explicit decision support for watershed management on military lands: stream integrity, interactive programming, and best management

2012
This poster will describe the development and application of a GIS-based, user-driven application to deliver a watershed management plan for Fort Jackson Military Base. The application, an ArcGIS project, integrates watershed monitoring data with Best Management Practices and other land use recommendations in a single, menu-driven environment to deliver up-to-date information on each Fort Jackson watershed and major land use including specific cantonment area activities. The project was developed for use in ArcGIS 9.3, which Fort Jackson is currently using. The project is a new piece of software to be used in the ArcGIS environment, employing VBA code to integrate more than 60 pages of water quality data, spatial units, and management actions. It is a decision-support tool to be used by managers to examine each watershed and consider land management options in relation to water quality. Although it is an ArcGIS project it requires only introductory GIS skill to run - essentially anyone can be trained to use the project.
