Mechanism Analysis of SMES-Based Damps Power Oscillation for Synchronous Interconnected Grid

Conceptual design and control strategy improvement of the superconducting magnet energy storage (SMES)-based power system stabilizer has proposed to damp power oscillation for synchronous interconnected grid. However, the mechanism that affects oscillation damping process is still not analyzed. With the feedback rotor speed outer-loop PI control, the mechanism analysis of SMES-based power oscillation damping is derived by the small signal and classical electric torque method in this research. Theoretical analysis shows that tuning the P and I gain can equivalently change the damping ability and synchronizing level. Moreover, the simulation results further verify the correctness of the power oscillation damping mechanism analysis.
