Improved corrosion behavior of high-purity Mg surface modified by laser scanning and polycaprolactone spin coating

2021
Abstract The high-purity Mg (99.95%) was surface modified by laser scanning and polycaprolactone (PCL) spin coating to improve its corrosion behavior. The 5% (w/v) PCL coating in 14.59 μm thickness bonded well with the laser-scanned surface with no visible defects at the coating/substrate interface. The electrochemical measurements and immersion tests in the simulated body fluid at 37 oC revealed that the corrosion resistance of high-purity Mg was enhanced by the PCL coating and the protectiveness of PCL coating could be further enhanced by the laser scanning. The weight loss after 28 days immersion time was reduced from 30 mg/cm2 to 14 mg/cm2 by the combined treatment of laser scanning and PCL spin coating.
