Propagation of High Energy Pulses of 10.6 micrometer Radiation through the Atmosphere.

1973
Abstract : The report contains a detailed theoretical discussion of the effect of CO2 laser (10.6 micrometer wavelength) energy on fog droplets, and the subsequent effects on the optical propagation path of the laser beam. Changes in refraction index in the beam cross section are considered. Plans for construction of a fog generation chamber for water fogs of controlled characteristics suitable for CO2 laser experimentation are given. Work on the development of CO2 TEA2 laser and triggering systems and progress on a 50 W CW diffusion cooled CO2 laser is discussed. Planned experiments, using the laser under development, for study of the interaction of such beams with laboratory controlled fogs are described. (Author)
