Demonstration of a Modular Electrostatic Precipitator to Control Particulate Emissions from a Small Municipal Waste Incinerator

� Abstract�-�Incinerationisconceptuallysoundasawastetreatmenttechnology.�Thereis,�however,� concernoveritsemissionswhenitisimproperlydesignedandoperated.�Anelectrostaticprecipitatoris� oneofthemostcommonlyuseddevicestocontrolparticulateemissionsfromboilers,�incineratorsand� someotherindustrialprocesses.�Inthiswork,�amodularelectrostaticprecipitatorwithsizingof�1�m�×� 1�m×1�mwasdevelopedforremovalofparticulatematterfromtheexhaustgasesofasmallwaste� incinerator.�Itsdesignwasbasedonasimplewireandplateconcept.�Thecoronadischargewireswere� connectedtoapositivehighvoltagepulsegenerator,�whilethecollectionplatesweregrounded.�The� highvoltagepulsegeneratorwasusedtoproducethecoronadischargefieldbetweentheindividual� dischargewireandthecollectionplate.�Theparticulateladenexhaustgasflowwasdirectedacrossthe� coronadischargefield.�Thechargedparticlesweredeflectedoutwardandcollectedontheplate.�The� collectionefficiencywasevaluatedasamassloadingratiobetweenthedifferenceattheinletandthe� outlettotheparticulateloadingattheinletoftheprecipitator.�Thecollectionefficiencyofthismodular� electrostaticprecipitatordesignwasapproximately�80�%.�
