Air emissions inventory for the Port Phillip control region
1992
An inventory of emissions to air from domestic, commercial and industrial sources in the Port Phillip Control Region has been conducted for the year 1990. Hourly emissions of pollutants have been calculated on a 3 by 3 kilometre grid cell basis for an area in excess of 14,000 square kilometres. In particular pollutants which lead to photochemical smog formation, acid rain and or reduced atmospheric visibility have been assessed. Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous dioxide have not been inventoried. The computerised inventory will be employed by mathematical modellers and air policy scientists to assess the impact of proposed air quality improvement options for Victoria. It is calculated that for a typical summer week day, approximately 430 tonnes of volatile organic compounds (VOC), 220 tonnes of oxides of nitrogen (NOx), 1864 tonnes of carbon monoxide (CO), 42 tonnes of sulfur dioxide (S02) and 26 tonnes of particulates are emitted in PPCR (1990). Motor vehicle emissions account for approximately 50% of total VOC, 78% of NOx, 91% of CO , 11% of SO2 and 46% of particulates.
