A Re-examination of Raffles's Statistics on the Population of Java in the Early Nineteenth Century --Some Problems of Early Censuses--*
1991
The author evaluates the reliability of the population statistics for early nineteenth-century Java Indonesia which were published in 1817 by T. S. Raffles. Data on household size sex ratio age structure and Chinese and other nationalities are analyzed. It is noted that a main problem with the data is underestimation of household sizes. (ANNOTATION)
