VISION AND POLITICAL WILL: FACING GLOBAL CHALLENGES AND ANSWERING LOCAL NEEDS

2011
Different examples in public transport demonstrate how strong political will can at the same time tackle both the challenges posed by globalization and the increasing concentration of needs. London, Curitiba, Seoul, Nantes, Grenoble, Strasbourg, Dakar, Dubai can all be considered as successful experiences in this field. Each focuses on specific best practices that, when delivered in unison, can increase the market share of public transport. They all contribute to the UITP sector strategy PTx2. Those examples illustrates how a bright idea can be the driving force behind political will, how visionary leaders are able to build alliances and how a problem-solving approach can provide the answer to mobility needs. The successful implementation of a brilliant idea is the combination of a determined will, a socially detected need and sound economic and financial viability. In line with UITP’s strategy, the following strategic drivers need to be put in place: deliver lifestyle services to become the mode of choice for citizens; develop integrated urban policies; create a new business culture; secure stable funding and investment schemes; design and implement effective demand management policies and measures
