Nonlinear elastic effects upon exposure of a metal surface to a laser pulse

2008
An influence has been investigated of nonlinear elastic effects on generation of acoustic waves upon exposure of a solid to the laser radiation. The attenuation of elastic waves which is slower as compared to predictions of the linear theory is explained. Possible acoustic determination of the sizes of nonelastically deformed zone is shown for arbitrary durations and temporal shapes of the damaging light pulse.
