Anesthesia and Emergency Laparoscopy in the Elderly Patient
2021
Elderly patients undergoing emergency laparotomy are a heterogeneous group with regard to comorbidity, preoperative physiological state, and surgical pathology, resulting in a complex interplay between frailty, anesthesia, and surgery. Urgent access to surgery is a priority and often does not allow preoperative pre-habilitation programs, although it is possible to correct some physiological derangements before surgery, such as electrolyte and fluid balance, blood loss, sepsis, and ensuring appropriate continuation of medication. Perioperative management demands precise and tailored assessment of the patient, which will allow the best anesthesia care.
