Possible applications of schemes for charged-particle acceleration on the basis of “Troll” synchrotrons

1991
The first work on the synchronous acceleration of electrons from thermal to relativistic velocity in a circular electromagnet, whose principle is the basis of the acceleration schemes discussed here, was done in mid-century in connection with verification of the autophasing principle. Its revival after a quarter-century as a symbiosis of two domains of technical physics, accelerating technique and the technique of ultrastrong magnetic fields, encountered considerable prejudices and misunderstandings. I express my heartfelt thanks to G. A. Shvetsov and V. F. Demichev for their constant support of this work in the area of the physics and engineering of ultrastrong magnetic fields. In the first stage A. L. Mints and A. A. Naumov, now deceased, supported the work in the area of accelerating technique. I take this opportunity to honor their memory.
