Pine wilt is a lethal disease of pine trees spreading rapidly along the southeastern of South Korea. This study was carried out to evaluate the potential to discriminate pine wilt-affected pine trees using aerial images taken with a drone at low-altitude in pine forest areas devastated by pine wilt in Pohang and Miryang. Red-green-blue (RGB) values of healthy and pine wilt-infected trees were used to calculate several spectral vegetation indices (SVIs) and M-statistics were performed in order to quantify the separability of healthy and diseased pine trees. Red (R) values were significantly higher in infected trees than those of healthy trees, while green (G) values were significantly higher in healthy trees. Significant differences in values between pine wilt-infected and healthy pine trees were observed in spectral vegetation indices and the best results were showed in Excess red (ExR), R-G, Color index of vegetation (CIVE), and Woebbecke index (WI). These results prove the usefulness of using a RGB values from aerial images to discriminate pine wilt-affected trees from healthy pine trees. ExR R-G, CIVE and WI that showed the higher M-statistics than the standard value 1 in Pohang (2.3-3.1) and Milrang (2.6-3.3) should be utilized to develop an algorithm or decision rules to classify aerial images, since they showed the highest capacity to discriminate pine wilt-affected trees using low altitude aerial images and be a valuable tool in mitigating the important threat to pine forests in South Korea.
