Usual Scabies With Nail Infestation

In recent years, the prevalence of scabies has greatly increased and unusual forms of the disease have been observed. 1,2 We present a case of usual scabies with nail infestation. This diagnosis was made by detection of Sarcoptes scabiei from the scales of the involved nail and through histological studies. Report of a Case A 51-year-old woman was seen in January 1976 with a papulovesicular eruption that was accompanied by scaling and scratch marks on the axillae, the lower portion of the abdomen, and the buttocks. The dorsal aspect of the foot showed thick scaling. The nail of the left first toe was elevated by large accumulations of hyperkeratotic debris (Fig 1). Innumerable mites (Sarcoptes scabies) and eggs were detected from scales of the nail (Fig 2).
