POLARIZATION IN FINAL STATE INTERACTIONS: 3He (3He, ) pα and 6Li (3He, )αα

1976
Publisher Summary This chapter analyzes polarization in final state interactions: 3 He ( 3 He, p) pα and 6 Li ( 3 He, P)αα. The first measurements of polarization in these two final state interaction reactions to date have become possible with the successful operation of the polarimetry facility at Universite Laval. The chapter shows a view of the scattering chamber, the polarimeters, and charge collection cup. It also presents a diagram of the electronics and the computer associated with one polarimeter. On line operation allows a particle identification of the detected events on the basis of the distinctive loans on a ΔE–E two-dimensional display. The routine operation consists of two measurements with the polarimeters alternating their positions with respect to the beam. This procedure has proven to be particularly useful with solid targets. The experimental results on the reaction 3 He ( 3 He, p) pα correspond to the ground state of 5 Li, which is broad and unbound, lying near zero energy in the p–α system. It is a Breit–Wigner resonance of J π = 3/2, coinciding with shell model expectations. In this model, configuration is well separated from other levels. This precludes ambiguities because of mixing of configurations.
