Spectra of fast protons from the reaction. pi. /sup -/+A. -->. p+X at 1. 46 GeV/c
1983
Momentum spectra of d/sup 2/sigma/d..cap omega..dp have been measured for fast protons knocked out at an angle 0/sup 0/ from the nuclei H, D, /sup 6/Li, /sup 7/Li, C, S, In, and Bi by 1.46-GeV/c ..pi../sup -/ mesons. It is found that in the spectra of all target nuclei from /sup 6/Li to Bi there is no clearly expressed peak from quasielastic ..pi../sup -/p backscattering. On the basis of the spectra measured in hydrogen and deuterium, proton momentum spectra have been calculated for the remaining nuclei with inclusion of absorption of hadrons in the nucleus. It is shown that introduction into the model of hadron-nucleus interactions, in addition to the Fermi motion, of elastic rescattering of the hadron moving through the nucleus permits satisfactory description of the hard part of the spectrum, and also explanation of the absence of a peak from quasielastic ..pi../sup -/p backscattering in the experimental spectra.
