Mining regions in transition - a global scan

2020
This global scan examines the capacity of mining regions to transition to a post-mining future. The study highlights the complex patterns of human-nature interactions and considers the influence of key contextual factors on transition capacity. Three tiers of mining regions are identified based on this analysis: least constrained capacity, constrained capacity and most constrained capacity. Factors supporting preventive, proactive and precautionary management of the transition are evident in 12 MRITs, which also show declining mining activity. The combined factors indicate that these regions will face fewer constraints to transition than other MRITs. The constraints existing in other MRITs meant seven of them were found to be poorly equipped to handle the transition.
