Engineering properties of soils and rocks

2000
The book gives a brief survey of the engineering properties of the major types of soil and rock. It also shows how these properties vary according to their geological setting, for example, the influence of discontinuities and weathering on the engineering performance of rock masses, the influence of sorting, packing and grain shape on the engineering properties of soil and the influence of mineral composition in the case of deposits of clay. Chapters are included on: soil classification, coarse grained soils, cohesive soils, soils formed in extreme climates, organic soils and fills, engineering behaviour of rock masses, engineering classification of weathered rocks and rock masses, engineering properties of rocks, subsurface water and ground conditions. The book is derived in part from "Foundation Engineering in Difficult Ground" with some updating and with the addition of some new material. (TRRL)
