A study on the relationship between the magnetic of a worn surface layer and the wear resistance

1993
In the pin-on-disk test, the wear rates of 5 wt.% Cr-Mn-Mo steel tempered in different temperature ranges are very different because of various wear mechanisms. The wear resistance of 5 wt.% Cr-Mn-Mo steel is much higher when tempered at 200 o C than when tempered at 300-700 o C. From the shapes of the wear debris, microcutting and microploughing are recognized. Also the wear surface parameters are measured with a Talysurf instrument. The coercive forces of the worn surface layers and unworn specimens are measured with a vibrating-sample magnetometer. The results show that the tendency of wear resistance is similar to that of the coercive force for unworn specimens. The variation in the coercive force for worn surface layers can reflect the change in the wear mechanisms
