Currently, the Autosomal Short Tandem Repeats (STR) polymorphisms, is a useful tool for determining biological parentage, and is standard technique for this purpose worldwide, providing high values of paternity probability, offering a good value of confidence. We determined the percentage of paternity exclusion through the review of paternity files in the Unit of Medical Genetics from Ciudad Bolivar, during 10 years. From a total of 315 files of paternity test, 33% were paternity exclusions, similar to previous studies. In 23% of the cases was discordant with 6 loci, similar that other studies. The mean of paternity index was 1,599,055, a reliable value for this type of study. In 92.4% of cases, the paternity probability was over the values required by Latin-American legislation and 98.1% higher than the European standard. There were not significant statistical differences in paternity exclusions between groups of ordering institutions.
